Hong Kong International Film Festival: Keanu Reeves Master Class March 19, 2012

Keanu Reeves discussed his new documentary “Side By Side” with local film director Yonfan at the Jockey Club Cine Academy Master Class on Sunday 18 March, 2012. During the wide-ranging discussion and taking questions from the audience, the internationally acclaimed Reeves discussed the future of cinema, the digital revolution and his experiences in interviewing some of the major filmmakers of our era: Martin Scorsese, George Lucas, David Fincher and James Cameron.

Being a film buff myself, but always struggling with the technical aspect of the film-making process, I found this documentary very informative and easy to follow. It presented the two sides of film making – whether the newer digital process, or being faithful to the 100-year-old 35 mm film process, it showed the pros and cons of both formats, allowing viewers to make their own conclusions.

The Master Class is one of the major activities organised by the Academy, which was established in 2010 as a three-year film education programme run by the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (HKIFFS) with a donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.

Golden Globe 2011 Fashion January 19, 2011

So coming from a complete amateur fashion follower, here is my biased and completely unnecessary take on the Golden Globes fashion this year:

  • Overall not many blunders, and even those that failed (Helen Bonham Carter, Michelle Williams, Tilda Swinton – I’m looking at you) their fashion faux pas’ were not in same league as a backless suited Celine Dion or a Bjork swan.
  • Not sure about this emerald-green craze. Not a colour many can pull off, although Catherine Zeta-Jones channeled Scarlett O’Hara masterfully so gets two points for her attempt.
  • Ladies if attending an award ceremony that is covered by the media ACROSS THE GLOBE, why not get your hair done?! If wearing a $10K gown, I’m sure an extra $200 to have your hair done up is not too much to ask.

So to my winners and one loser:

Best dressed

  • Natalie Portman - this is the way to dress a ‘blooming’ baby bump. It’s quirky and different, but somehow this is why it makes me love it even more. The dress did divide critics though – they either loved or hated the pink Victor & Rolf dress, and I’m guessing it was the polarizing sparkly red rose on the front. I wasn’t sure what to make of it either, but still thinking about the dress and remembering her hair (see, it’s up and classy ladies) and diamond necklace, this is the look that has stuck the longest in my mind. Kind of reminds me of Carrie Bradshaw when SATC was still cool and not just followed by Bogans and Chavs thinking that drinking Cosmo’s and visiting the Meatpacking District means they have seen the ”real” NYC (remember the big flower badge craze).
  • January Jones – phwoar!! Looking hot lady. Love the red Versace, which shows off her bangin’ body, without being slutty or obscene. Gorgeous hair and make up too, giving the look the right level of class. This is Marilyn Monroe in Gentleman Prefer Blondes, not in Something’s Got To Give (n.b. her last unfinished movie that she was fired from for boozing, popping pills and generally falling over drunk and naked).
  • Oliver Wilde- gorgeous colour, gorgeous sparkle. This black Marchesa dress with silver sequins and tulle would make any woman swoon and is the ultimate princess dress, without looking like a uhm, princess, I guess (i.e. no tacky tiara’s here). This would be my favourite dress of the night if she had not broken my boring-hair-at award-ceremonies rule, this strapless dream would have looked even more unbelievable with just a simple French Chignon.

Worst Dressed

  • Michelle Williams – sorry bland shapeless potato sack doesn’t an award gown make. I don’t care how much of a flower child you are honey. Peace out!

Clash of the Titans Premiere @ Graubman’s Chinese Theatre April 7, 2010

With thanks to NY Post and Warner Bros I was invited to attend the Hollywood premiere of “Clash of the Titans” at THE Hollywood cinema du-jour for over 50 years, Graubman’s Chinese Theatre, on Wednesday 31 March, 2010.

With new Hollywood “it” boy and fellow Australian, Sam Worthington headlining the new blockbuster, there was no way I was missing out.

Donning my new BCBG dress and Jimmy Choo shoes I’ve never worn, my friend Brad an I exchanged our too-cool-for-school NY-ness for name-dropping at every opportunity L.A.

It was a great experience watching a film within the hollowed confines of a true Hollywood cinema, one that has literally seen it all and even greater being able to bond (albeit it briefly) with da man Sam about how great us Aussies are (and he is a  fair dinkum, Crocodile Dundee, I-would-deny-they-actually-existed-if-I-hadn’t-of-met-him, dead set Aussie).

The after party was held at our hotel, another well established Hollywood landmark - the Hollywood Roosevelt, otherwise known as the place were the Academy Awards first held their annual awards in 1929 and more recently were Lindsay Lohen would get into screaming matches with on-off girlfriend and resident DJ (at the hotel’s Teddy’s) Sam Ronson.

As for the verdict on the film, I was never privy to the cult original back in the 80′s, so maybe I am unable to judge this one. A basic Greek myth storyline with Transformer type fight sequences, it tells the tale of the little people waging wars against the Gods, with evil God of the underworld Hades obtaining big brother, good God-God-of-the-Gods Zeus permission to wage war on Earth- when really he is seeking to upthrown his big bro. The only man to save the day is son of Zeus and a mere mortal- Perseus. Perseus is demigod, but he wants to be all man and is annoyed with his powers (all very Star Wars-esque). What will he do?  I’m sure the rest is pretty self-explanatory.

As for the hyped 3D (yes, another film released this year with the new fandangled wizardry) I did feel like the effect was tacked on at last-minute to bump up appeal and ticket prices and in fairness the only time the 3D was enjoyable, let alone even effective, was in the burst out credits at the end.

As much as hate to pick at a performance from a fellow Aussie (and a hot one at that) I found the whole Greek demigod with super okker accent a bit tough to swallow. Also of a distasteful nature was the romantic embers lit between demigod Perseus and his guardian from birth Io. Isn’t that kinda incestuous, her being a pseudo step-mum and all…then again, it is all about Greek gods and myths…incestuous stories abound I guess.

While for me it was a mildly entertaining blockbuster- the kind that it is enjoyable at the time, but then instantly forgettable, there is one scene that saves it from complete mediocrity= the fight scene against super size scorpions. If only the rest of the movie could have been this edge of your seat good!

Kick Ass Premiere March 17, 2010

Filed under: Movies — talesfromtheprfrontline @ 2:16 PM

I was fortunate enough to secure a double pass to a special advanced screening of Kick Ass on Monday 15 March 2010. Held at the School of Visual Arts School in Chelsea it appears this advance screening was put on purely for the key comic book proprietors of NYC to build buzz (and encourage sales of the comic book and related merchandise naturally) ahead of the movie’s nation-wide release on April 16.

Looking around at the packed theatre noshing away on their free drinks and popcorn prior to the screening, it got me to thinking… putting on the movie a month in advance for all these comic book aficionados who become up-in-arms if even a stitch in a costume is portrayed incorrectly in the film version of their beloved comics, this movie must be good right?

Quick answer- yes!

I found this a whole-heartedly enjoyable film, like a naughtier, R rated version of the first Spiderman. Taking every boys fantasy of what it would be like to be an ordinary superhero and bringing it to life, Kick Ass is a dialogue rich adventure ride that takes genre conventions and turns them on their head. It pays tribute to the rich history of the comic book movie, and yet in the process manages to create something wholly fresh and original. There is insider jokes littered throughout the movie gently satirising the genre while at the same time paying tribute to what has gone before in the comic cannon. These jokes, about Spiderman, Batman, X-Men and even TV cult favourite Lost generated the biggest laughs in my screening, as if all the comic book aficionado’s were getting secret acclimation on-screen.

The basic premise of the film follows Dave Lizewski a normal high school student (i.e.: invisible to girls, hormone crazed and kinda a geek) and comic book fan who one day decides to become a super-hero, even though he has no powers, training or meaningful reason to do so. After getting his ‘ass-kick-ed’ on his first attempt to be a hero to society, Dave returns from hospital ‘looking like Wolverine’ with damaged nerve endings and steel plates through-out his body.

This allows him to fend off some thugs in a second attempt, that quickly becomes an internet phenomenon on You Tube. The infinitely superior real-life super heroes ‘Big Daddy’ and daughter ‘Hit-Girl’ track him down (via My Space - another subtle joke) and the story follows the classic good versus mafia bad showdown.

The movie throws in McLovin in a turn as head mafia bosses son ‘Red-Mist’ and Chloe Moretz in what should be a Best Supporting Actress nomination portrayal of tough as nails (and gutter mouth) 12-year-old Hit Girl and some sparkling dialogue ala Tarantino, i.e. where dialogue follows violence and uneasy laughter

A scene that exemplifies this, involves some hard-core violence and Dave facing an impending death, where he starts thinking of all the things he may miss out on in life, including “Finding out what really happened on Lost” these scenes are reminiscent of Tarantino and his seminal classic Pulp Fiction were you find yourself laughing despite the presence of severe violence. Like Tarantino, I think this movie will provoke a lot of discussion regarding the comic book movie and follow Pulp into cult-dome.

After the screening a special Q&A session was held with the creators Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr, who told an interesting story involving how the director Matthew Vaughn funded the movie himself as no studio wanted it, then sold it back for double the original asking price.

Really this movie lives up to its name- it is ‘Kick-Ass’ and hope it does well at the box-office, so that we can see a sequel!

Oscar Party @ Mia Dona March 10, 2010

One of my must-watches (I am a movie buff after all) is the Annual Academy Awards which are usually shown delayed on Monday nights in Australia (after most of the top awards have already been announced on news cycles), so I was excited that now being in NYC that not only was I able to watch live, but that people generally get into the Oscars spirit and there is bashes held all over town.

I choose to attend the Oscar party at Mia Dona on Sunday 7 March, 2010. This Upper East Side modern Roman style trattoria had a deal for $25, which included two cocktails (including the blue Avatar), as well as a tasting menu that included meatballs (which were incredibly tasty) , mini panzarotti, mini white-bean bruschetta, and panna cotta with caramel sauce. Popcorn with “edible Oscar-gold dust” was also in non-stop supply.

As dining in this restaurant would normally set you back at least double the price, thought it would be a good way to give the restaurant a trial. Must admit that we were pleasantly surprised when the food kept coming out and was never in short supply. Adding to that, for those that managed to hang around for the top acting gongs at around 11.30pm, the Mia Dona team bought out some additional lovely light prosecco for customers to enjoy on the house.

It was a pity then, with all the hearty food and drink that there was only one TV screen to view the award show, which was made difficult to hear until most of the crowd dispersed - as like most viewers, bored waiting for awards they knew about (not sound mixing etc.).

 As for the big award recipients, I was incredibly glad to see Christoph Waltz’s win for Inglorious Basterds. He was masterful in the role of a charming yet scarily sadistic Nazi. I also give kudos to Best Actress winner Sandra Bullock;
she really WAS good in The Blind Side. I have always been a fan of her though as she is always so self-deprecating, in fact, I have never seen an interview were she is not taking the mickey out of herself, which is rare in an actress. Being Australian we love anyone who doesn’t take themselves too seriously.

Speaking of Australian’s, great seeing Sam Worthington on the red carpet – even if he had the most horrendous performance in Avatar (so glad that didn’t win Best Picture) – he is true Aussie ‘bloke’ as can be witnessed with his interview with Ryan Seacreast…”putting on the monkey suit mate”.

Final word is on the second show that forms the whole Oscar spectacle, the Red Carpet! There seemed to be a severe lacking of star power this year and those who were in attendance in general put on quite a boring show with regard to attire.

Nicole Ritchie for me was best dressed. I loved the uber-sexy retro beaded, backless Reem Acra gown with long sleeves that dipped gorgeously at the back revealing her tattoos. I am not a fan of tattoos, but this dress showed them off in a very sexy, dangerous way. Capped off with smoky feline eyes and a high bun, the look had all the hallmarks of Bianca Jagger in Halston at Studio 54.

Best actress Sandy did a commendable job for her lovely gold and silver metallic Marchesa gown. I love the intricate sleeve detail and it showed off a well oiled body – plus the colour worked a treat with the actual statuette she got to take home. But I was let down by the flat boring hair.

I also really loved eternal fashionista Carrie, um, oops, Sarah Jessica Parker and her pale yellow Chanel Haute Couture gown with silver embroidery at the neckline, dramatic retro bun and Fred Leighton jewels. At first I was a little unsure and I still think maybe not right outfit for the Oscars, plus it seems a bit too big on her willowy body…but there is just something about it that keeps drawing me back in and loving it.

As for worst dressed, it pains me to say one of my girl crushes and all-time favourites, Charlize Theron takes the award hands-down.

Her dress would be okay aside from the cinnamon bun swirls on her breasts. I mean really?! what was she thinking?? I’m all for a bit of sexy at the Oscars but to draw attention to your breasts like s burlesque stripper makes for a very confusing choice on this one.

Sex and the City 2! January 6, 2010

Filed under: Movies — talesfromtheprfrontline @ 9:18 PM

Yes, like ever other girl I am beyond excited about the new Sex and the City movie coming out in May. More so, because I will finally be living in NYC – as I have always dreamt about! With the new trailer out, using “Empire State of Mind” got me so excited about my impending move.

When the original SATC movie came out I had just moved to Hong Kong from Melbourne and it made me miss my girlfriends a lot. I still organized to view the movie on opening night with my new found friends and made sure to incorporate SATC staples, such as Cosmopolitans and cupcakes! Here is hoping I will get the chance to organize something like this again with some hopefully new found girlfriends in NYC!

N.B I hope the second movie is better than the first, which was more flimsy copies of the original series characters…but regardless, it’s better having them on-screen than not! By looks of trailer there may be more focus of fashion rather than relationships…and not sure I like the poster with only Carrie and not the other four.

Avatar December 24, 2009

Filed under: Movies — talesfromtheprfrontline @ 3:25 AM

Yes, I am a massive movie buff/fan. Yes, I am also a movie publicist’s dream, as I am always there opening weekend (before bad word-of-mouth spreads) and any kind of movie ‘event’ or gimmick I am there!

Take Avatar, all the boys I knew were dying to see this, as James Cameron back to filming aliens. Myself, I am not much of a Cameron fan…but first full length movie in 3D and we get to wear the funny glasses? I am in!

Well the opening scene in Avatar is spectacular with Aussie Sam Worthington awaking in his zero gravity pod and a droplets of water floating past. Brilliant! Also the glowing effect on Pandora was visually fantastic. As for the rest, well, hmmm.

Yes Cameron didn’t rely on the whole 3D effect throughout the movie, so kudos to that. But also seems like when they were getting ready for the technology to be ready for this film they forgot certain aspects…like, um..storylines and acting and dialogue (some of the most wooden performances and hilariously bad dialogue in past few years).

Cameron: “Hey I am about to shoot in 6mins…we forgot to name this expensive rock stuff…some one give me a name?’

Crew Member: “Well it’s a reference to plutonium yeah?”

Cameron: “Yes, but it unattainable, hence why they have to go to Pandora to drill for it.”

Crew Member: “Well put Unattainable and Plutonium together, what about Unobtainium?

 Cameron: “Brilliant, let’s shoot!”
